The ED has arrested Haryana Congress MLA Surender Panwar in an “illegal” mining-linked money-laundering case, official sources said on July 20. The agency had raided the premises of the 55-year-old legislator in January.
Panwar's arrest followed a series of events initiated by the central agency, which began with searches at the premises of Congress MLA Rao Dan Singh from Mahendragarh two days prior. Panwar, an MLA representing Sonipat, is involved in mining operations spanning Haryana and Rajasthan. His son was also questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) team that arrived at their residence on Saturday morning.
The ED took over the investigation into an illegal mining case involving Panwar last year, subsequent to multiple FIRs filed against him and others by the Haryana Police. In January this year, the ED conducted searches at 20 locations across Faridabad, Sonipat, Yamunanagar, Karnal, Chandigarh, and Mohali.
The investigation revealed illicit practices in mineral excavation and sales by owners of screening plants and stone crushers in Yamunanagar district. These practices included evasive measures such as avoiding proper e-Rawana bills or producing counterfeit physical copies to evade detection.
