Uttar Pradesh Declares Maha Kumbh Mela Area in Prayagraj as New District

Maha Kumbh Mela

In a landmark decision, the Uttar Pradesh government has declared the Maha Kumbh Mela area in Prayagraj as a new district, officially named "Maha Kumbh Mela District." The decision, announced on Sunday, aims to streamline administrative operations and ensure the smooth organization of the grand Maha Kumbh Mela scheduled from January 13 to February 26, 2025.

New District for Maha Kumbh

This new district includes four tehsils—Sadar, Soraon, Phulpur, and Karchana—and over 60 villages. The formation of the Maha Kumbh Mela District is a temporary measure implemented during the event, as millions of devotees from across the globe are expected to participate, requiring dedicated management and resources.

The district administration has been appointed, with Vijay Kiran Anand serving as the District Magistrate and Rajesh Dwivedi as the SSP. The designated officers will have expanded powers under the Indian Civil Defense Code, 2023, and other relevant laws, ensuring efficient governance and coordination during the Mela.

Administrative Details

According to the official notification issued under the Uttar Pradesh Prayagraj Mela Authority Act, 2017, the district boundaries encompass key revenue villages and the entire parade area detailed in an annexure to the order. The District Magistrate, along with an appointed Additional Collector, will oversee all administrative and revenue-related functions for the Maha Kumbh Mela District.

Significance of the Maha Kumbh Mela

The Maha Kumbh Mela, held once every 12 years, is one of the most significant religious and cultural events in India. The upcoming event in Prayagraj will include six royal bathing days and is expected to attract millions of pilgrims. The government’s decision to create a dedicated district underscores its commitment to ensuring a safe, organized, and seamless experience for all attendees.

High-Level Preparations

Preparations for Maha Kumbh 2025 are in full swing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Uttar Pradesh on December 13 to review progress and inaugurate major developmental works related to the event. The newly formed district is expected to play a crucial role in coordinating these efforts and managing the massive influx of devotees.

Temporary District Status

While the Maha Kumbh Mela District will function as an independent administrative entity during the event, it will revert to its original administrative structure once the Mela concludes. This temporary arrangement is a standard practice to handle the extraordinary scale of operations required for such an event.

Cultural Milestone

The Maha Kumbh Mela is not only a spiritual gathering but also a showcase of India's rich cultural heritage. With this proactive step, the Uttar Pradesh government aims to set a benchmark in event management, ensuring the successful organization of one of the world’s largest religious congregations.
