TikTok Resumes Service for US Users After Trump Vows to Delay Ban

TikTok

TikTok has resumed operations for users in the United States after a brief voluntary shutdown lasting less than 24 hours. This follows President-elect Donald Trump's promise to delay a nationwide ban on the popular app, which was initially imposed after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a law citing concerns over TikTok's ties to China.

The app expressed its gratitude to President Trump for providing the clarity and assurance needed for its service providers, emphasizing that no penalties would be imposed on those offering TikTok to over 170 million Americans.

TikTok also highlighted that the app is critical for millions of small businesses, with over 7 million such businesses benefiting from the platform. The company’s statement also noted that it views this as a strong defense of the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship.

TikTok confirmed that it would continue working with President Trump to find a long-term solution that allows the app to remain in the U.S. Earlier, in the lead-up to his swearing-in, President Trump had urged tech companies not to allow TikTok to “stay dark” and pledged to take action.

Trump stated on Truth Social, "I am asking companies not to let TikTok stay dark! I will issue an executive order on Monday to extend the time before the law’s prohibitions take effect, allowing us to make a deal to protect national security."

Trump further stated that the order would provide liability protection for any company that assisted in preventing TikTok's shutdown, and that he envisioned a joint venture where the U.S. would control 50% of TikTok's business operations.

The resolution of this issue remains closely tied to national security concerns, as TikTok's operations in the U.S. continue to come under scrutiny due to its Chinese ownership.
