RG Kar Rape-Murder Case: Kolkata Court to Pronounce Quantum of Sentence for Sanjay Roy Today

In the highly publicized RG Kar rape and murder case, Sanjay Roy is set to be sentenced today, following his conviction for the brutal assault and killing of a 31-year-old trainee doctor.
The tragic incident has sparked national outrage, highlighting concerns over the safety of medical professionals and the need for increased security in medical institutions.
The victim’s death, which occurred on August 9, 2024, in a conference room at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has left the country in shock.
Conviction and Legal Framework
On January 18, 2025, the Sealdah Court convicted Sanjay Roy under sections 64, 66, and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Section 64 (rape) mandates a punishment of at least 10 years in prison, which can extend to a life sentence. Section 66 (causing death or persistent vegetative state) stipulates a sentence of no less than 20 years, which could be extended to a life sentence or even death penalty.
Section 103(1) (murder) of the BNS carries provisions for the death penalty or life imprisonment. The sentencing will take place today, with Roy's statement scheduled to be heard at 12:30 pm, followed by the pronouncement of the quantum of punishment.
The Case: Shocking Brutality
The case revolves around the brutal rape and murder of the 31-year-old trainee doctor, whose body was discovered on August 9, 2024, in a seminar room at RG Kar Hospital.
Investigators found that the victim had been sexually assaulted and subsequently murdered in the hospital premises. The shocking crime led to nationwide protests, with the medical community, particularly doctors, demanding justice for the victim.
The investigation quickly led authorities to Roy, a 35-year-old civic volunteer, who was arrested the day after the incident, on August 10, 2024. Roy's arrest followed the discovery of a Bluetooth earphone near the victim’s body. A review of CCTV footage revealed that Roy had entered the seminar hall wearing a similar device, matching the one found at the crime scene.
The trial began on November 12, 2024, with proceedings held behind closed doors. Throughout the trial, 50 witnesses were interrogated. On January 9, 2025, the trial concluded, and the verdict was announced a few days later.
Sanjay Roy’s Statement After Conviction
After being convicted on January 18, 2025, Sanjay Roy maintained his innocence, claiming that he was being falsely implicated in the crime. He stated, "If I had committed the crime, my Rudraksha mala would have been found at the crime scene," suggesting that the authorities were framing him for a crime he did not commit.
Despite his presence in CCTV footage near the seminar hall, Roy denied any involvement in the incident. He also claimed that the real perpetrators were not being prosecuted.
Roy's insistence on his innocence has been met with skepticism, especially as the evidence presented during the trial, including the CCTV footage and eyewitness testimonies, painted a compelling picture of his involvement in the crime.
