Quad FMs to meet post Trump inauguration, Donald Trump’s Visit for India to be finalized

With Donald Trump set to return as the 47th President of the United States, India is optimistic about a potential visit soon, particularly for the next Quad Summit.

The summit, which involves key Indo-Pacific nations—India, the United States, Japan, and Australia—has gained significant traction, and Trump’s administration is expected to further bolster the cooperation on this front.

India anticipates a significant push in bilateral trade relations, with a focus on addressing issues such as tariffs on Indian goods. However, cooperation on critical and emerging technologies under initiatives like iCET may take a backseat for now.

In recent developments, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held productive bilateral meetings with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya. These discussions centered around strengthening bilateral ties and deepening the Quad’s influence.

The Quad, which was originally championed during Trump’s first term, was elevated to a leadership-level initiative under the outgoing Biden administration. Minister Jaishankar posted updates on social media, sharing the progress made in these discussions.

He expressed his pleasure in meeting his counterparts from Australia and Japan, reflecting the growing importance of the Quad, especially as the Trump administration prepares for its second term. Sources familiar with the transition process have indicated that Marco Rubio, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State, has made advancing the India-US relationship a top priority.

Rubio is expected to engage with Jaishankar soon after his Senate confirmation, further solidifying the strategic ties between the two nations. The Quad Foreign Ministers are all in Washington, D.C. for Trump’s inauguration, where the discussions on strengthening the grouping will likely continue.

Additionally, it is expected that Trump will discuss a potential visit to India in the near future, with attention also on his upcoming appointment of a new U.S. Ambassador to India, as current Ambassador Eric Garcetti prepares to step down.

As Trump’s administration takes shape, both countries are looking forward to enhanced collaboration, with the Quad summit and a potential India visit high on the agenda.
