BIG BREAKING Court Sentences Sanjay Roy to Life Imprisonment in RG Kar Rape-Murder Case, Imposes ₹50,000 Fine

The Sealdah Court in West Bengal has sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment in the horrific RG Kar rape-murder case. The court also imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on the convict.

The verdict comes after Roy was found guilty of the heinous crime, marking a significant step towards justice for the victim and her family.

On Monday morning, the Sealdah Court area was completely sealed off with three-tier barricading and heavy police deployment as the judgment was pronounced in the high-profile case. At 10:40 AM, Sanjay Roy was brought to the court under tight security.

The convoy included two police cars and several police vans with tinted windows to maintain confidentiality. Over 500 police personnel, including Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, and Inspectors, were deployed to secure the area. Sessions Court Judge Anirban Das delivered the sentencing.

The case dates back to August 9, 2024, when an on-duty junior doctor was brutally raped and murdered inside a seminar room at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The incident shocked the entire nation and led to widespread protests, including a major strike by doctors across West Bengal. After 162 days of trial, the court delivered its verdict, providing a sense of closure to the victim's family.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, reflecting on the verdict, said, “Before the decision, I had called for a rally demanding the death penalty. While we respect the court's judgment, we still believe the death penalty would have been a fitting punishment for this crime.”
