Bhupesh Baghel Accuses Government of Neglecting Farmers and Inadequate Preparations for Paddy Procurement

Bhupesh Baghel criticizes BJP government over insufficient paddy procurement preparations for Chhattisgarh's Paddy Tihar festival.

Paddy Procurement

Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has leveled serious accusations against the state’s BJP government, claiming that they are unwilling to procure paddy from farmers. With the annual paddy procurement season, known as "Paddy Tihar," set to begin on November 14 in Chhattisgarh, Baghel alleged that the government’s preparations are insufficient and that the state's paddy farmers, a political focus since Chhattisgarh’s formation, are being neglected.

"Government Avoiding Paddy Procurement": Baghel's Sharp Criticism

Speaking at a press conference in Raipur, Baghel accused the BJP government of turning its back on farmers. He highlighted that, as the BJP’s then-state president, Vishnu Deo Sai had previously advocated for paddy procurement. Now, Baghel claims, the government is avoiding its responsibility, planning to procure paddy only for a short 40-45 day period, with inadequate readiness.

Under the previous administration, Baghel noted, paddy was collected continuously and efficiently, with pickup completed within three days. However, the BJP government’s recent directive shifts responsibility for paddy pickup from rice mills to cooperative societies, which, Baghel claims, are ill-prepared for this task. He further stated that collection centers lack the necessary preparations to handle incoming paddy, leaving farmers uncertain as the procurement date approaches.

Former Agriculture Minister Ravindra Choubey Echoes Concerns

Former Agriculture Minister Ravindra Choubey also criticized the BJP’s handling of the paddy procurement process. He pointed out inconsistencies in rules and regulations, noting that while the BJP once demanded efficient procurement processes, they have since introduced rule changes that complicate the procedure for farmers. Choubey emphasized that during the Congress government’s tenure, cooperative societies were financially supported with Rs 250 crore in grants, whereas the current administration’s policies have left these societies struggling with financial burdens.

Both Baghel and Choubey have called on the BJP government to address these issues immediately. They urged the government to meet the demands of cooperative society workers currently protesting, and to ensure necessary preparations are in place to support the farmers of Chhattisgarh.
