Assistant Teachers Accuse Raipur Police of Misconduct During Protest

Raipur: The ongoing protest by assistant teachers in Raipur took a dramatic turn on Sunday night as female teachers accused the police of physical assault, tearing clothes, and misbehavior.

The teachers, mostly holding a B.Ed degree, have been demanding the reinstatement of their jobs after being terminated in December 2024. On Sunday, a large group of assistant teachers gathered at Teli Banda Talab in Raipur, along with their families, to continue their demonstration.

Police forces were heavily deployed in the area to prevent the protestors from assembling. Despite this, the teachers remained steadfast, refusing to leave until their demands were met.

Tensions escalated later in the evening when a scuffle broke out between the police and the protesting teachers. Female teachers claimed that they were subjected to inappropriate behavior by male police officers. Some teachers tearfully shared their experiences, alleging that they were being forcefully removed without the presence of female constables.

Reports of police officers being under the influence of alcohol and harassing the teachers further fueled the accusations. A few teachers also claimed their clothes were torn during the confrontation.

One teacher said, "They are touching us, pulling our dupattas, and dragging our hair. There is no female police to assist us. The male officers are harassing us, and some of us have fainted." According to police officials, the protest had been ongoing since early morning, with the assistant teachers refusing to leave despite repeated requests for them to disperse peacefully.

The authorities noted that the demonstration had exceeded 10 hours, prompting orders from the SDM to disperse the crowd. During the removal process, some teachers reportedly fainted and were taken to the hospital in ambulances for medical care.

The protest stems from the government's decision to terminate 2,900 assistant teachers on December 31, 2024. Since then, the teachers have been organizing protests, both in New Raipur and Raipur, demanding their jobs be reinstated.

They have made it clear that they will continue their protests until their demands are met. While the authorities claim the protest was unconstitutional, the teachers maintain that they will not back down until they are reinstated.
